Open Rhinoplasty
When considering having plastic surgery of any sort you will need to factor in several things, it is a serious decision to make and one that you should research well. A popular procedure to have done is rhinoplasty or a nose job as it is more commonly known.
This is a complicated procedure to have and must be carried out only by a highly skilled professional. There are two methods which you can have done. These are open rhinoplasty and closed rhinoplasty. Both procedures have their good and bad points.
Rhinoplasty is often done for cosmetic reasons although some people do have it for medical ones. Birth defects, face traumas and breathing problems may all call for a rhinoplasty operation to be carried out. Often, people will have other surgery at the same time, especially if it is for cosmetic reasons.
A person's face can be vastly improved by the nose being realigned or made smaller; there are several different things which can be done.
Rhinoplasty was first developed in ancient India by a physician who was classed as the father of plastic surgery. The techniques he developed are very similar to the ones used today and in fact the forehead flap rhinoplasty is still used today.
Up until the 1970's all rhinoplasty surgery was carried out through the nasal passage which is referred to as closed rhinoplasty. Open rhinoplasty was developed and is now very popular among surgeons, although some still prefer to use the older technique.
You can have rhinoplasty performed while you are under general or local anesthesia and for some procedures, sedation is used. The surgeon will decide which procedure to do on your nose. If it is an open procedure he will cut the skin that separates your nostrils.
If it is a closed procedure he will simply make incisions in your nostrils. The incisions are all inside your nose so are not seen by people and the incision on the skin separating your nostrils is very small. Closed rhinoplasty is suited to very simple procedures, as it is very difficult to expose the whole nose this way.
Open rhinoplasty is more suited to complicated work as it allows the surgeon greater access to your nose. The skin is lifted back so all of your cartilage and bone is exposed, allowing the surgeon to work easily.
Although some extra work may be required to the cartilage which will be damaged in this procedure, surgeons do find this method a better and easier technique to use. They find they can work more easily and give you a better finish to your nose job.
Some surgeons also have very little experience with closed rhinoplasty and feel more comfortable doing the open procedure.
Whichever method your surgeon decides on, he will discuss all of the procedure with you in full, he will want to ensure that you fully understand what is going to happen.
Once you and your surgeon are ready then the procedure can be done and you will feel happier and more confident. If for medical and breathing reasons you will feel so much healthier than before.
